2D Art Development Log

Character Concept Art:

I tried to practice my character making skills in pixel art and this is what I came out with that was Sci-Fi themed. I made this by first making the shapes of the body, this started with making the head and going to the body and then legs and arms. I coloured the character a silvery colour and this is because it fits the Sci-Fi theme. I then added the wire hair for the robot and then went on to detailing the face, I done this by creating some rust on the left of the face and then doing the eyes and the mouth of the robot.  After this I then went onto detailing the characters arms and legs. I done this by making dents and this was done through shading and as well as that I added rust to the them, as well as on the legs I created mud patches where the robot had been walking. Finally I went on to creating detail for the body, this was done by adding dents with shading and then adding quite a bit of rust, I then added a chain to the character, this was done by creating a pattern near the center of the body and then going around it with a worn off gold colour.

Tileable Assets:

For my practice on 2D art for environments I have created four tileable assets in photoshop that will go along with a 2D Sci-Fi themed game, the first one is dirt from another planet. This was created by by having three different layers one was for the dirt on the top, another for the mud underneath and the last was for the details. I created these all on a 16×16 pixel grid and with simple colours. The other three are for backgrounds inside of a base on this planet, the first was for the normal background the second was for a window and the last was for the wiring. These all were done roughly the same way, I started with a grey background and I drew a circle in the center and then done six around it. After this I then filled in the gaps with darker shades of the same grey. After this I then went and did the details for the other two by drawing a window in the center of one and wires on the other.

Game Assets:

For practice on pixel art I created four game assets one for spikes, one for a lever, one for a key and the last for armour. I created these simple because I am not the greatest when it comes to doing art so I chose to do pixel art. I created the spikes by creating tall triangles, then added some shade for lighting. I then done the lever after and this was done by creating a platform and the pole for the lever, I then went on to creating the end of the pole and then after that I created shading and I did this by selecting a lighter version of the colour and shading the top. After this I then went on to creating a key for a door and I done this by Making the outline of the key in yellow and then I created some shading with a lighter yellow on the top of the key. Finally I then created the armour and this was done by me making an outline for the armour then colouring it in blue and doing some shading with a lighter shade on the left. I then proceeded to create a center piece and this was done by creating a dark blur circle with a lighter shade in the center.

Animated Sprite:

I practiced my animation skill on photoshop with pixel art and I feel like it went well and this is because the animation work and the gun looks like its shooting. I created this by starting off with a circular handle on the left and then I decided to put the trigger in there as well. After this I then made another layer and this was for the top of the gun and I drew white around then extended it out to make the top. I then went onto creating the barrel and I did this by taking a light grey and drawing a short barrel for the gun, then I started to do the grip underneath with a darker grey and I did this so they were obvious they were different parts of the weapon. I then decided to put the magazine in then center of the weapon so it looked like a fusion cell and this was to give it a more Sci-Fi fell. I then drew a circle in the center with a really light grey and then added red so you could see the power source of the ammo. I then made another layer for the details and on this layer I drew an iron sight and a bar that shows the amount of ammo that is left as well as a cooling vent. After this I then made this an animation by making the trigger pulled back on another slide with a laser leaving the gun as well as an effect coming off. I then made each of these frames last 0.1 seconds and to go on forever.
