3D Modelling Workshop

Session 1: Crate Pt.1

In this session I was getting used to Maya and how some of the tools worked. I started off by starting with the simple tools which involved adding shapes to the scene, such as a cube, cylinder or a sphere. I then went on to tools such as move, resize and rotate and these were known as the basic tools. After this I then went onto experimenting with the shapes and tools by crating simple models. This so I was able to get used to the functionality and uses of the software.

Session 2: Crate Pt.2

In this session I added a crate to the scene and then I added to the crate by extruding the center bits of each face in. This was done by adding more divisions to the faces and then pressing Ctrl+E and then pulling the faces in and by making the gap smaller by resizing the extruded faces. After this I then went onto creating slats that went in the middle of all the extruded faces diagonally I done this by adding in another cube and reshaping it so it fit perfectly, I then went and rotated it and made sure it slotted in the gap without any missing areas.

Session 3: Crate Pt.3

In this session I unwrapped the crate to texture it and I done this by adding the crate to a UV for a bitmap so I can take this into Photoshop to texture the crate. I done this by selecting the sides of the crate and selecting the cylindrical UV and then I put that into the UV editor and after that I did the same but for the top and bottom but instead I used the planer UV instead of the cylindrical UV. After this I sewed the top and bottom to the sides in the UV and this made a ‘t’ shaped UV and then I also used the planer on all of the slats and then added them to the UV map. After this I then went on tho rendering the UV map and then taking it into Photoshop and saving it as a PSD. After this I then went onto google and found a texture that is wooden slats and then I took this into Photoshop and and then I made it look more detailed. I done this by adding depth by adding a shade to the parts were a shadow is and added white to where the light would be shining on. I then put this on the UV map to make a texture for the crate.

Session 4: Tile-able Texture Pt.1

In this session for the first part we experimented with different ways to do hand painted textures and this involved creating slit end in wood and making a metal material with scratches on it as well as dent. I did this to practice effects foe any hand painted textures and to learn how to make them look more realistic. After this I then moved onto creating a tile-able texture and I done this by starting off with drawing rock shapes (with a graphics tablet) in the center and then going to the edges and then changed the offset setting so the middle moved to the outsides and then I finished of with the center to make the texture tile-able and look like stones.

Session 5: Tile-able Texture Pt.2

In this session I finished off with my hand painted texture and I done this by making a cloud preset and colouring it a dark gray and putting it in the background on another layer, after this I went over all of the lines with a black shade with the opacity turned down. I then started to draw cracks in some of the rocks. After this I made two new layers one for highlights and one for shadows, they both had a low opacity but the shadows I drew in black and the highlight I drew in white. On the left and top of all the rocks and cracks I done highlights to make it look raised and on the bottom and right of the cracks and rocks I done shadows to make it look like its lowered.

Session 6: Oil Drum Pt.1

In this session I started to create an oil drum and I did this by first starting of with a cylinder, and then I created more divisions down the barrel so I am able to bevel it and create two indents. One of these indents were near the top and the other was near the bottom, After this I then created another cylinder that went straight from the top to the bottom of the barrel and I duplicated this all the way around the cylinder. I then created another two cylinders that went around the oil drum but this had two extrudes on it to create extra detail. I also extruded the middle of the main part of the oil drum in to create even more detail to the drum.

Session 7: Oil Drum Pt.2

In this session I made some extra detail to my oil drum and I done this by creating a lip for the top of the oil drum and I done this by extruding the top in so the outer ring was raised and the inner wasn’t. After this I went onto creating the cap and this was done by creating a cylinder and putting it in the top of the drum and using the boolean difference tool to cut a hole in the top and after this I extruded that up to create the bottom part of the lid. I then went and got another cylinder and extruded the center in to create a ‘I’ sort of shape. I then went on to creating another cylinder and removing the top and bottom and extruding every other edge out to create a spiky cylinder. I then duplicated this a rotated it by 5 degrees, the made it look like the bit in the center of a cap, I then moved these cylinders into the middle of the ‘I’ shaped one and this made the cap complete.

Session 8: Oil Drum Pt.3

In this session I added a little bit extra detail to the drum and this was done by duplicating the cylinder around the inner cylinders and putting it around the center bit of the main cylinder. After this I then went and started to create a low poly version of this and I started this of by creating a cylinder and making the same size as the last oil drum. I then added more divisions to the drum and extruded the center parts in as well as the bits near the top and bottom. I then extruded parts in and out to create the ripple sort of effect that the high poly has this was done by doing a fair few extrudes and resizes.

Session 9: Oil Drum Pt.4

In this session I then added a little bit of detail to the low poly as well as creating the lid and cap for the low poly. This was done by me extruding the top of the low poly in so it created the lip at the top and then I used another cylinder with the boolean difference tool to cut a hole in the top of the low poly. After this I then extruded that up to create the top of the lid and then I create the cap by creating a cylinder and resizing it to the same size as the high poly cap and then put it over the top of the low poly oil drum. After this I went to unwrap the low poly and I done this by using the cylindrical UV on any of the sides that were vertical and I used the planer UV on any of the horizontal sides. I then paced all of this into the UV editor so it was ready to be textured.
