UAL Awarding Body – Level 3 Diploma

Unit 8 – Project Proposal

Name:  Cameron McCarthy
Pathway:  3D Modelling
Project Title:  Weapons Used In Revolutions
Section 1: Review

Throughout the course I have done 7 other units and thanks to these I have learnt a bunch of new skills as well as developing ones I knew even further. Throughout the units I also have learnt my stronger and weaker points in the course, For example my 3D modelling is one of my weaker parts, this has given me a better understanding on how I can improve and how I can get a higher grade.

In units 1,2,3,4 I did some 3D modelling and I learned to use Maya for the first time, I found it hard but not as hard as I thought it would be and this was due to me already having some knowledge on 3DS Max and this helped me because it is very similar to Maya, this is because they are both programs that are used to create 3D models. I gained some skills from this and this included being able to unwrap and being able to create simple objects, for example a oil drum which I then also learned how to take it into substance painter and to make it look realistic. I also learnt how to use all the relevant tools that I will need for later on in the course, for example the boolean tool and this can be used to cut wholes into shapes using other shapes or it also can be used to glue shapes to others.

Barrel

I then went on to find out in units 5,6,7 that 3D modelling is not what I am best at and I know this because when it came to modelling the knife I found it difficult and not that enjoyable at all, this was due to me not being good at 3D modelling or getting confused on what I was doing. For example when it came to modelling the handle I did not know how to create any sort of bends so I needed some assistance and I did not enjoy it that much. I have also learnt that I am not the best when it comes to 3D modelling and I see it as my weakest point in the course.

Karambit Knife Pic

In units 1,2,3,4 I also did some 2D art and I learned how to use Photoshop at a decent knowledge and I also learned to use Illustrator at a small amount of knowledge but enough that I can create some assets for a game. I had a small amount of knowledge when it came to Photoshop when starting these units and this is because I have used Photoshop in the past so I had a slight idea on what I was doing. From using Photoshop in these units I have gained some skills and these include being able to create characters with multiple layers and being able to create animations on 2D art. In Illustrator in these units I have learned how to make assets through the different types of tools.

Assets

In units 5,6,7 I have gained some extra skills when using Photoshop and these include knowing how to create assets in an isometric art style and this I found a little difficult to do at the start and then later on I got better and found it easy to do. I then went on to learn how to edit sounds with Audacity and I found this fun as well slightly difficult at the same time. I came to realise that 2D art is not my strongest topic but not my weakest and this I am okay with and this is due to my art would not be that bad when it comes to choosing the technical side.

IsometricBuilding

In units 1,2,3,4 I did some coding in Unity and I found it really hard and this is because I have never done any coding before so I started off by watching tutorials and then going through and doing them and this is so I could get used to the layout of Unity, as well as getting used to coding a little bit. I also learned how to debug and go over some problems that can happen, for example if you spelt something wrong or if you have a different name for something. I also have learnt how to create variables in code and how they can be used, as well as learning how to use the tools in Unity and these include the buttons, the resizing tools as well as the moving tools.

Problem Fixing

In units 5,6,7 I gained a little bit of extra skills from coding in these units and this is because I have had some help from my colleges and this involved with the errors that I have came across with. For example one of the skills that I have learnt in these units is being able to make a character to move through forces that are indicated onto the character. These were done with the A and D keys to make the character move left and right and this is because this is what is mainly used in every game to move the character move.

Section 2: Project Concept

My Idea

My idea for this unit is to create a range of weapons and this is to show how much the weapons have changed throughout the revolutions, the weapons that I will be creating are a Sabre which is a sword and a cannon which these were both used in the French revolution, I am also going to create a musket and this will come under the industrial revolution and the final weapon that I will be doing is a modern day sniper and this will be showing how weapons are now in the modern era. The reason for picking these weapons is because it really shows how much weapons have changed throughout the eras and revolutions, it also shows that as time as pasted the weapons have got a lot more deadlier.

Link To Theme

My idea links to the theme revolution and this is because it is based in different revolutions and this involves the French revolution and the industrial revolution. It also fits in the theme because I will be comparing the weapons from these revolutions to the ones in the modern day. I will also make it fit into the theme revolution and this will be done by making the weapons look worn out and damaged so they look like the have been used a lot like they were in the revolutions.

Asset Creation List

The assets that I will be making for my models include the weapons that I will use to show how the weapons in the revolutions have changed. The revolutions that will be involved are the French revolution, the industrial revolution as well as modern day. The assets that I will be creating are:

  • A Sabre (Sword)
  • A Cannon
  • A Musket
  • A Sniper From The Modern Day

Software

I software that will I be using for this unit:

  • Chrome
  • Maya
  • Substance Painter
  • Microsoft Word

Section 3: Evaluation

To keep myself on schedule I will be using a website called Trello to keep myself on track so I do not fall behind, I will be colour coding parts to tell me how close I am to finishing that task and as well as how close I am till each piece if work has to be done.

I will need to make sure that the models that I am going to make are right and I will have a reference image and this is to make sure that the model does not go off course. For example when it comes to making my sword I will have an image of it in the back. I will ask other students for feedback during the the development stage.

Throughout the project I will have a development log and this will be used to record everything that I have been doing through the weeks. I will use this to reflect my work when it comes down to writing the final evaluation, it will help because I will easily be able to remember what I have done. I will also be using it to address where I have gone wrong and what I could’ve done to make it better. I will be marking any feedback that is given to me from the other students that are on the course.

For the project management I will be going through each week and making sure that all the tasks are done for that week. I will be able to easily do this and this is because it’s all colour coded so it’s easy to tell what is done and what will need doing. If I fall behind with a topic I will focus that to get that done so I can get back on track again.
